Defensive Score Sheet: MSU vs. Minnesota

Watching this game is probably what Wisconsin's intra-squad scrimmages are like. With six minutes to go in the first half the Spartans led 13-6. That's right, Minnesota had six points in 14 minutes. How does that happen? For starters, Michigan State's suffocating defense literally made the Gophers look like they run an offense without a playbook (although many people would say that is what Minnesota's offense looks like all the time). It was a 20-18 Minnesota lead at halftime thanks to a 3-pointer as the clocked ticked down to zero. Even many Big Ten football games had more first half scoring this season!

While the Gophers got back into the game and even held a five-point lead early in the second half it was too much Michigan State down the stretch. It was a complete contrast to MSU's defensive effort at The Barn on New Year's Eve (MSU's defensive efficiency that game was an Izzo-angering 108.7 compared to 86.4 here).

FINAL SCORE: Michigan State 61, Minnesota 50
